On a side note, do you know a person is qualified to be a candidate for election as a Member of Parliament (MP) if he or she:
1. is a citizen of Singapore;
2. is 21 years old and above on Nomination Day;
3. is registered as an elector in the current registers of electors;
4. is resident in Singapore on Nomination Day and has been so for a total period not less than 10 years;
5. is not subject to any of the disqualifications specified in Article 45 of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore.

Which also means a person shall not be qualified to be a Member of Parliament when
1. is and has been found or declared to be of unsound mind;
2. is an undischarged bankrupt;
3. holds an office of profit;
4. having been nominated for election to Parliament or the office of President or having acted as election agent to a person so nominated, has failed to lodge any return of election expenses required by law within the time and in the manner so required;
5. has been convicted of an offence by a court of law in Singapore or Malaysia and sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year or to a fine of not less than $2,000 and has not received a free pardon.

As such, there’s no need to speculate for the truth will be revealed on nomination day.

Who to vote for in my first Singapore Presidential Election?

For the first time in my life, I will have the chance to vote during Singapore’s Presidential Election. Although Singapore had 4 elected presidents and this coming election is for the 5th president, there were only two elections being held. The first election was in 1993 and the president elected was Ong Teng Cheong with 58.69% of the votes from 952,513 voters, while the second election was in 2011 and the president elected was Tony Tan Keng Yam with 35.20% of the votes from 745,693 voters.
